Goblin sharks are deep-sea sharks that live worldwide in ocean basins. They are most commonly recorded near continental slopes and seamounts at depths of 100 to 1,300 meters.

Major sightings come from waters around Japan, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. They prefer steep underwater terrain where they hunt fish and squid in the mesopelagic and bathypelagic zones.
Why They Are Rarely Seen
Because they live at extreme depths, goblin sharks are rarely encountered by humans. Most records come from accidental catches in deep-water fisheries or specialized research submersibles.
