Stay Calm and Make Yourself Look Large

Do not run. Running can trigger a chase instinct. Stand upright, raise your arms, and hold your ground. Speak in a firm, loud voice to identify yourself as a threat.

Fight Back with Focused Aggression

If a mountain lion attacks, fight back immediately. Target the eyes and nose with sticks, rocks, or your hands. Use bear spray if available, and keep your movements aggressive and decisive.

Use Defensive Gear and Travel Smart

Carry bear spray and keep it accessible. Travel in groups, stay alert at dawn and dusk, and avoid dense brush. Keep children and pets close to reduce surprise encounters.
